5 documentaries to watch this weekend

Last issue, we brought you a list of our favorite books for conscious living. So this time around, we wanted to round up the documentaries we think are worth a watch. The kind of films that offer a great conversation starter or make you feel more informed. From diving into the problems we’re facing as a planet and casting a critical eye over the fashion industry to some inspirational solutions that give us hope – these are our must-sees for your next rainy weekend.

Kiss The Ground
Narrated by Woody Harrelson, this documentary unpacks the link between the earth’s soil and climate change. Filmmakers follow a group of activists, policymakers, farmers and scientists as they explore regenerative agriculture: how it works and how it may be key in preserving our planet. Harrelson is hardly the only celebrity involved in the project, with Tom Brady, Giselle Bunchen, and Ian Somhelder also making an appearance. It offers a refreshingly positive point of view and optimistic plan to counter the very real issues we’re facing at the moment.

The True Cost
This eye-opening documentary looks at an issue close to our heart: fast fashion and its impact. Everything from pesticides and pollution to low-wage workers and some costs you maybe wouldn’t expect. It’s full of insightful interviews with people at the core of the garment industry, those who are most affected as well as those in a position to make change. We love that this film shows a human side to the industry that can often be forgotten and helps end that disconnect that can come with easy, online consumption.

The Minimalists: Less Is Now
If you ever feel overwhelmed with ‘stuff’ or been tempted to down-size your life, this one’s for you. Aptly one of the shorter films on the list, this doco is all about minimalism and intentional living. It features Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus, longtime friends and New York Times–bestselling authors as they look at the benefits of having less. Explaining cool concepts like consumerism, why we hold on to junk, and some real structure on how to let go. Perfect to put on if you don’t have a lot of time.

Watch

Worn Stories
A little different to the rest, Worn Stories is actually an 8-part docuseries about the clothes we love to keep. Funny, fascinating, and a pleasure to watch, each episode dives into real people and the stories around their most cherished pieces of clothing. It’s a surprisingly raw and poignant look at the intimate relationship we can have with what we wear – how clothes can hold importance for us, define us, and connect us all. A great palate cleanser after some of our more serious recommendations.

Tomorrow
Instead of getting stuck in the ‘what ifs’ and worst case scenarios, this doco focuses on the concrete solutions we already have that are helping to tackle climate change. The French filmmakers travel the world discovering people making a difference on a local level. From San Fran’s top-class recycling program and urban gardens in Detroit to an Indian village’s decentralized democracy and Copenhagen’s biking culture. A welcome dose of optimism if you’re feeling disheartened by the state of the world.
