It’s been a road of detours and the occasional speed bump that led Nasrdin Dchar here – to his life as an award-winning actor in hit television series like MOCRO MAFFIA. Now one of the most interesting voices of his generation, the Moroccan-Dutchman has come a long way from the small town of Steenbergen where he grew up. We have been lucky enough to collaborate with Nasrdin on a new collection. For the project, the actor wished to develop a capsule that reflected his current state of being. A natural evolution from his love of street style with a new understated maturity. The looks drew inspiration from his greatest influences and crafted them into pieces that reflect who he is today. We’re pulling back the curtain on the curation process – diving into each of the four looks and the stories behind them.
“For many years I very consciously formulated what I stand for and what my vision is on certain important issues. Now, I mainly want to accommodate those insights into my work – and I still reach a large group of people with that. I am content with that at this moment in place and time, and probably will be in the future. I feel a kind of urge to make some things less explicit. I think you can see that in the clothes we have created together for this portrait. They refer very nicely to super important things that make me the person I am, but in a modest way. You don’t immediately see it, they are elegant looks that fit my age, and upon closer inspection they represent more: my Moroccan roots, Rotterdam, acting, and parenthood.”
Nasrdin grew up a part of a close-knit Moroccan family, one of the only few around – something that gave him a unique sense of self and taught him to embrace his “otherness” from an early age. Inspired by these roots and his visits to the country, this look draws from the aesthetic and hues of Old Medina and the gentlemen who relax in its plazas. The outfit is crafted for days spent in the sun with lightweight constructions and airy fabrics. The key piece is a camel-colored lightweight jacket crafted from a summer blend of wool and linen. With a crisp finish and just a hint of stretch, this fabric selected by the actor lends itself perfectly to this kind of soft tailoring. Everything else chosen for the look is equally comfortable and cooling: bone drawstring trousers in a similarly breathable blend, a light cotton-cashmere polo in pastel yellow, and suede penny loafers.
Nasrdin originally moved from his small town to Rotterdam to study economics, where he was exposed to an incredible arts scene that changed everything. It was there he discovered a diverse acting community and his passion for sharing the stories of migrants that often remain untold. This look was curated as an ode to Rotterdam where he still resides some twenty years later. Nasrdin wished to make something that reflected the artistry and attitude of the city. We ended up creating a wink to the famous local poet and style icon Jules Deelder who exemplified this attitude with his effortlessly cool and monochromatic dressing. The unconstructed suit offers a strong tailored look that still feels a little unpolished like the city he loves. Though it is all black, it is still designed for summer with the two-piece crafted from pure wool in a smooth tropical weave and the shirt made from a pure linen batiste with a one-piece collar to give that slightly more laid back feel. He wears the collar over the jacket, again as a nod to that irreverence.
Nasrdin has been blowing us away with compelling portrayals ever since – from sell-out stage shows inspired by his life to the critically-acclaimed film that earned him a prestigious Dutch Film Festival Golden Calf. His love of acting has seen him become a frequent guest on the red carpet, creating the point of inspiration for this look. Never one to shy away from taking risks, Nasrdin is always reinventing himself and he sees the red carpet as yet another chance to do this. Often playful and daring in his formal dressing, this tuxedo has the kind of bold elegance a premiere demands. The double-breasted jacket with wide peak lapels has a strong silhouette and is designed in a bamboo fabric that is designed to feel cool even under the brightest lights. The trousers with tonal tuxedo stripe in a pure S100 wool pair flawlessly with the jacket too. Nasrdin opted to style everything else classically with a tuxedo shirt and ottoman bow tie – all in white too – and black patent loafers.
Though he’s always been a family man, in recent years Nasrdin has himself become a father. The change has inspired him to slow down and enjoy his success a little more. Inspired by this, he’s created practical pieces for Dutch family life – casual weekends at home with his kids and cycling around town. Comfort was key in his curation here, with lots of relaxed cuts and light fabrics. Central to the look is the navy irish linen utility jacket, an easily wearable piece that can be paired with almost anything in his closet. He styled it with some of our best luxury basics like the white cotton-cashmere t-shirt knit, selvedge jeans, and low-top sneakers in camel suede. Each classic and casual at their core, but elevated by high quality fabrics and fits that are sculpted to Nasrdin’s body. To be prepared for the notorious Netherlands weather, he also added one final layer – this season’s favorites for when the weather takes a turn: the peached water-repellent lightweight jacket in dusty blue.
“I have worked very hard for twenty years, and now I very much feel the urge to take time to enjoy where I am now. Enjoy my family and the opportunities I have to independently develop new things as a creator. I am currently enjoying my dreams instead of chasing new ones with everything I have.”
We headed to the Old Luxor Theater, where Nasrdin once performed to capture the collection and learn more about the man behind the actor. We talk about his journey to become a well-respected performer and an important voice for those without one, and the importance of embracing our differences in creating art and positive change.
