Scott’s desk-to-dinner style

Stepping into an office, it’s clear the effect the last few years have had on style. In a post-pandemic world, comfort is king. Striking the sweet spot between smart and casual seems to have become an art form unto itself. One of our favorite looks for fall that nails this balance is from style advisor Scott at Mitchells in Westport. Last week, we got together to chat about this shift in style and how he created his office-approved look.

Scott, thanks for sitting down with us. You look sharp, relaxed – this style suits you. How do you feel about everyone embracing a more laid-back approach to style in the workplace?
“Luxury casualwear has become a go-to for more men over the last few years and I’m all for it! I love the comfort and freedom of movement that comes with lightweight jackets and more relaxed trousers. Working in a professional environment, I always want to find that balance between being modern and put together. When I find the right mix, I feel comfortable and confident. It helps me feel better when working with clients and giving presentations.”

The hero piece is obviously this incredible checked safari jacket. What drew you to it?
“Like I said, I’m loving the lightweight jackets. The fit and style of a safari jacket is perfect for a flexible wardrobe piece. Sharp enough to wear to work but casual enough to wear on the weekend too. This one is a really nice mix of a classic pattern in a not-so-classic color which makes it feel modern. It’s made from this special alpaca blend from Ferla which means it has a wintery, felted feel too.”

All the other pieces seem just as considered, striking that same kind of balance. Tell us about what you chose and why.
“Well, because I have quite a bold jacket, I kept the rest of my styling mostly in navy blues. The jacket is a more casual silhouette so I wanted to pair that with a plain white shirt and tie underneath. Even though it’s simple, the tie is a high quality flannel to still lift the look. Pairing with the navy chinos and sneakers also gives me the option to head out in the evening to grab a drink. I like to add a roll or two to my cotton pants too, just to keep it feeling contemporary!”
