Layering like a pro: what our advisors are wearing this fall

For every morning right now that we awake to crisp air and a few more golden leaves, there are days where milkier skies grumble and threaten to ruin a perfectly great fit. There’s no way around it, fall is a beautiful albeit fickle season. Sure, we could cater to its every whim, change with the weather. But our time is precious and there is a far easier way to outdress the unpredictability: layers. An art unto itself and one that can take years to master.

We chased down some of the style advisors with our favorite looks for fall from the new campaign to ask how they do it. Digging into their approach to these autumnal months – from their signature look and personal formula for layering without sacrificing style to the pieces that make it easy. Each has their own point of view on fall dressing but with one common thread: the materials you choose matter.

I picked this as one of my favorite looks for fall but I’m curious, why do you think it’s ideal for this season?

I love my look because it’s completely tonal and green which I think is a great color for any season but truly an ideal color for fall. From the 2-piece suit to the super 120 wool shirt and even a green tie, finished with our latest one-piece loafer. Autumn is hard to predict. Both the suit and shirt are made from the finest wool, so whether it’s going to be a warmer or chiller day, this look will make me feel warm or cool. Whatever it is that I need.

Do you have some advice for those looking to master the art of layering?

Wear something made from the finest natural materials. Materials that keep you warm will keep you cool as well. My secret weapon layering piece would be a sleeveless cardigan, as it will keep me extra warm, but without the sleeves, you have no restriction and feel extremely comfortable too.

Is there anything else you can’t go without?

A cashmere scarf. You may not need it every day, but there definitely will be days you would love to wrap a great scarf around your neck. If you drive to work by car every day, just leave it in your car and you will have it handy when you need it.

For you, what is the difference between fall and winter dressing?

In my opinion, fall is always a bit difficult because the temperatures can change so quickly in the Netherlands. It could be 15 degrees on one day, the next might be 5. So in my opinion, the main difference is the materials used. I would go for merino or cashmere-silk in fall. That combination is so comfortable, warm from the cashmere but soft from the silk. Then switch to full cashmere in the winter because that’s the warmest option.

So what makes this look so perfect for this season?

I love how this outfit is casual and elevated at the same time. I think the colors are nice and fresh, and especially good for the fall to counter all the darker tones around you. I really love the fabrics of this look too. The soft touches of the flannel shirt, combined with the cashmere knit and the wool-cashmere lightweight suit makes it a warm and comfortable outfit. It’s perfect to wear on a date. I can see myself going to an amazing wine bar in Amsterdam where they serve incredible food. Just need to be careful with that red wine!

It’s very well put together. Can you tell me more about how you approach your styling?

My advice for layering is to not use too many colors, try to stay in the palette of your main piece. For example, in the case of this outfit, I combined a couple shades of gray with beige. And a nice crisp white sneaker to spice it up.

Get yourself some knits too, they are so easy and versatile. And you really can wear them the whole year round, depending on the material. Another must-have is a nice pair of shades. A lot of men think that when the summer ends, that you can leave your shades at home. I personally pop on shades only with the slightest glance of sunshine, all year round. It does not only protect your eyes, it also elevates your whole look.

What appeals to you the most about your signature look?

The light color of this check and the elegance of this suit makes it suitable for any occasion. I like that. The lighter weight in combination with the fresh color scheme makes this a look not just for fall but for every moment. For me, it is something to wear when I’m in the store or during an occasion or a nice dinner.

Versatility is super important. What changes when you are dressing for fall versus say winter?

With winter I think more of darker colors, even wine red and dark terra, while autumn for me is a combination of lighter blue, beige, and lighter brown tones. I really appreciate layers when there is lots of variable weather and multiple activities, so I can dress comfortably at any time and for any occasion.

Layers are crucial. Do you have a favorite piece that you would suggest?

A beautiful cardigan knit is always comfortable. I feel very at home in a nice suit and a turtleneck or jeans shirt underneath

Why do you love your signature look for the fall season?

I love this look because it’s timeless. Especially that classic camel hair and camel color of the jacket with the quintessential gray flannel trouser. For me, that gray flannel trouser is a mainstay in every man’s wardrobe. So is the jacket. They have the look and feel of fall and I love that both fabrics have that flannel touch. But they are still light enough to wear inside, or you know, to an office or a party.

What’s your top tip for layering?

I have told my clients for years and years to always wear a third piece, whether it’s a sweater, an outerwear piece, a sports coat or my favorite, the vest. Sometimes it’s just a tie. Like if I’m in the store and it’s busy and I can’t wear a jacket because I’ll get too hot, I’ll just wear a knit or I’ll just wear my vest. But I always, no matter whether I’m out to dinner or even at the office, I’m always wearing some type of third piece. It separates the men from the boys.

Do you have a favorite fall layering piece?

I’m extremely excited about the quilted vest. I think it’s a great new addition to what we’re doing and, of course, it falls into my “third piece” category. The navy super-120 natural stretch flannel blazer is another one. It’s absolutely the perfect weight for a blazer where we live for fall and even into winter.
