Our city guides for fall: Vancouver & Amsterdam

Fall brings a host of visual treats, but none more soothing than the way it causes the world to glow with that unforgettable, soft light. That autumn light does for these two cities what a thoughtful choice of clothing does for a demanding man: it ensures that the unique inner and outer coincide almost magically. This makes both these cities perfect for exploring this fall. We share with you the recommendations we received from our local Atelier Munro style advisors, a selection of must-visits that can serve as a guide and introduce you to the current level of sophistication of these two cities: Vancouver in Canada and Amsterdam in the Netherlands.

Vancouver

A local told us “Before it’s your favorite place, it’s a place you’ve never been.” Vancouver has the best of both worlds: it’s diverse, metropolitan and yet you’re always close to nature. Fortunately, the city’s incredible natural beauty remains undimmed – and surrounded by snow-capped mountains on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other, Canada’s third-largest city is indeed a rare place of beauty. During its history, the city has become home to a broad range of cultural influences, who have each contributed to this city’s vibrant and distinct assemblage of cuisines, heritage, belief systems and artwork. Although these cultures have retained a sense of their original identity, their influence has shaped Vancouver into a thriving, international city with a unique vibe.

If Vancouver was a man, he would be neither artist nor bohemian. No, he is a modern man with a sense of tradition. Formal and informal all at once. A man of elegance. One who understands the art of striking the sweet spot. Generous, scattering his beauty like colored leaves. This abundance is not kitsch, but opulence. “See how I am dressed, I am being watched, but don’t want to take anything away from you.” That’s Vancouver. A place you’ve never been before. But soon to be your favorite. Roberto from our Vancouver showroom has put together a list of hidden gems that besides the more famous highlights includes some of the best restaurants, galleries, and museums to visit while in town, as well as the best day trips from the city.

Amsterdam

We can safely say that Amsterdam is one of the most unique cities in the world. Amsterdam is a city of many times and a city in time, as a famous Dutch writer once remarked. The mere fact that the city is below sea level is a sign of its rich history, of the creativity and inventiveness of its inhabitants. Indeed, there is a degree of creativity and sophistication that can be found at all levels of daily life: the stores, the cafes, the restaurants, not to mention the theaters, exhibitions, and museums.

Whichever way you look at it, there is a sense of self-confidence, a high degree of self-assurance. It is as if everything is possible, for everybody. One can switch from a full-canvas suit to white jeans under a collarless linen shirt. From a pair of Bluchers to sneakers. Amsterdam has the confidence to change, to engage in dialogue and relationships. To simultaneously revere tradition and embrace modernity. Amsterdam offers not only a journey through the past, but more importantly, a relationship with a city that is invariably moving forward. No wonder we’re pleased to share a list of must-visits that the style advisors at our flagship store have shared with us. It includes some of the best hotels, galleries, stores, cafes, museums, and restaurants to make absolutely sure a visit to Amsterdam in fall will be as magical an experience as the hazy light of autumn.
