Getting to know the father & son from Southbrook Organic Vineyards

You may have already caught a glimpse of the Redelmeiers at one of our tastings or even in our latest campaign. We first came across Bill and Andrew while searching for a way to celebrate our newest Atelier Munro House in Toronto. The pair ended up creating a delicious limited-edition wine for our opening (and even more for us since).

From our first meeting, we felt an instant kinship with the family of sustainable winemakers. Coming from Dutch roots, they have an admirable approach to growing and to life. Their winery, Southbrook Organic Vineyards located in the beautiful Niagara-on-the-Lake region was one of the first to be certified organic and biodynamic in Canada. All their wines are painstakingly produced, completely organic, and free of additives and sulphites. It’s an earth-first ethos, instilled in Bill by his parents on the family farm and passed down to the new generation.

“I took one particular lesson from my mother. When we had made a mess in our room, she always said to my brother and myself: ‘If you make a mess, you are the one to clean it up.’ That mindset needs to grow roots in many aspects of our modern society. We cannot get away anymore with not caring about what we do. We made a mess, so we have to clean it up. It's high time for a change.”

When Bill first made the decision to move towards being organic and biodynamic, there were only two other certified organic vineyards in Ontario. A courageous move requiring a tonne of patience. It’s a movement that’s slowly growing in the region, with more steadily joining the list each year. The winery now stands a prime example of what is possible in low-impact viticulture.

Aside from their commitment to sustainability, another big reason we fell in love with the Redelmeiers is their passion for the craft. They’re making wine for the wine lover, with great care taken in every one of their bottles. They brought this same dedication to detail to our collaboration, curating an elevated workwear collection for their life on the vineyards and beyond. Practical utility jackets and boots for their day to day and relaxed tailoring for tastings with guests to crisp-but-comfortable seersucker suits for hosting summer events. Each piece is curated for comfort and durability with a distinct level of refinement.

We sat down with the Redelmeiers to discuss the organic wine industry and sustainable viticulture. The values that drive them, their endless pursuit of quality, and the inevitable transition that will make Andrew the lone successor of his father’s business.
