Discovering dance in Antwerp

Last month, we were lucky enough to hop across the border to Belgium for an exciting new collaboration – dressing the next generation of dancers. The project with Junior Ballet Antwerp saw the creation of a made-to-measure costume for their latest performance ALONE/TOGETHER by Nicolo Fonte. A black suit perfected for movement and performance was crafted for each of the young dancers. Made from breathable high-stretch wool with crease resistance, the suits were tailored perfectly to their bodies to create a distinctly modern contrast to the classical ballet. If you’re interested in witnessing this beautiful fusion, the piece will be performed as part of Metamorphosis at Handelsbeurs in Antwerp on June 26th and 27th.

In our opinion, the show will be well worth a day trip. We did so ourselves to see the suits in action for the first time. You can preview the performance as well as the incredible city in our making of the video, captured on the roof terrace of the Museum aan de Stroom – another excellent spot to visit if you’re in town.

We also took the time to sit down with Alain Honorez, former principal dancer of the Royal Ballet of Flanders and artistic director of Junior Ballet Antwerp. The ballet company’s co-founder spoke to us about paving the way for the next generation and the blurring lines between tradition and innovation.
